Thanksgiving Week Reminders

Troop,
No meeting this week for Scouts. When we come back next week it will be in room 20 at the school.
This Saturday at 9:30 am we will be helping the Knights of Columbus unload Christmas Trees in front of St Leo the Great School.  This is the primary fund raiser for the Knights. The knights have supported the Troop for over 30 years and this is our chance to give back. If you are in town this Saturday please join me in this worthy endeavor.

I am very pleased to publish next Scouting years calendar.  Boy Scouts 2017-18 Calendar

The Scouts have planned for a lot of great camp-outs and activities at this year’s planning meeting.  There are a lot of great opportunities for the adults to assist in planning or attending these activities.

If you have an interest please contact me before your opportunity is taken by another.

Thanks

Troop 1113 Mulch Fundraiser 2017 Wrap-up

Congratulations are in order to all the Scouts and parents of Troop 1113 who delivered mulch to 23 neighborhoods in less than eight hours  during the mulch drive this year.  We achieved our financial goal to fund the operations of the Troop for another year.  We even had an increase over last yearWith the best mulch delivery weather we have probably ever had, the  majority of the work was finished by about 2:30. After take down, clean up, pallet removal, and yard grading, the clean-up crew was still able to get out of the yard by 3:30.

There were no injuries, minimal broken bags, and only two initially misdirected deliveries out of 134 orders. Demand for mulch was very high this year owing to the early onset of warm weather.  We completely sold out of mulch almost two weeks before the deadline.  Donations were also up!

This was our most cost-effective sales drive of the last decade.  Our total expenses were the lowest since 2007, as were our average expenses per bag delivered.  As a result, the margin per bag paid into the Troop Treasury was the highest on record.  We used a leaner mix of mostly donated trucks, trailers, and pickups this year, and mailing costs were minimized because of the high response rate to our hand-delivered flyers.

Some 29 hardworking Scouts and friends took part this year. Some two dozen parents also volunteered in the Mosby Woods lot, and on the road.  We couldn’t have done it without our parent volunteers and their donated vehicles, gas, time, and efforts.  The yard set up was efficient, and the food was excellent.  There was a good mix of delivery vehicles with one large donated stake truck, one rented mini-flatbed, seven pick-ups, four trailers, and three cars or vans.  The forklift was kept humming all day long, loading mulch and making numerous deliveries throughout the Mosby Woods neighborhood.  Smooth operators all.

Congratulations, and thank you one and all.

Dick Greene.

A special thank you from myself to Mr. “MulchMaster” Greene for his extraordinary organizational skills.

Troop Mandatory Event,
The date for delivering Mulch Flyers this year is Saturday February 11, 2017.
The Troop will need 8 – 10 cars and adult drivers on Saturday February 11th starting at 9:00 AM.  We will leave from St. Leo’s parking lot to deliver Mulch Flyers to local neighborhoods.  Drivers will be given maps of selected neighborhoods and about 150 flyers to deliver.  The Scouts will provide the labor to deliver the Mulch Flyers to individual houses using the buddy system.  Please come in Class-A uniform for flyer delivery.
As usual, doughnuts, coffee, and hot chocolate will be made available.
With full participation we should be done by lunchtime.  Mulch Flyer delivery is the first step in our Mulch delivery program. This is the Troop’s only fund raiser all year long.  Please plan on participating. The flyer delivery activity is mandatory for all scouts.

Happy Scouting Anniversary!

Happy Scouting Anniversary!

Scouting officially began in the United States on February 8, 1910, right here in the heart of Washington, D.C. Maybe that’s why Scouting Anniversary always seems extra special in our Council! Now, 107 years later, our program has produced millions of young leaders and reached countless lives, teaching young people character and leadership skills that stay with them for life.

In NCAC we marked the beginning of Scout Anniversary Month by holding our Annual Business Meeting. For the first time ever we streamed the meeting on Facebook Live (watch the recording here!) as we elected our new board members, including new Council President Dr. Jim Smith! Congratulations to our new board members, and thank you to all our board members, past and present, for your service.

A Scout is Reverent – Scout Mass – Feb 5, 9AM

Troop,
This weekend is Scout Saboth/Scout Sunday. Each year near the commemoration of the founding of Scouts we honor our founder through Scout Sunday. St. Leo the great has a Scout mass this Sunday, February 5th,  at 9:00 followed by a breakfast for Scouts and their families. I encourage each Scout to attend the religious service of their choice in uniform this weekend. A Scout is reverent.
