Congratulations are in order to all the Scouts and parents of Troop 1113 who delivered mulch to 23 neighborhoods in less than eight hours during the mulch drive this year. We achieved our financial goal to fund the operations of the Troop for another year. We even had an increase over last year. With the best mulch delivery weather we have probably ever had, the majority of the work was finished by about 2:30. After take down, clean up, pallet removal, and yard grading, the clean-up crew was still able to get out of the yard by 3:30.
There were no injuries, minimal broken bags, and only two initially misdirected deliveries out of 134 orders. Demand for mulch was very high this year owing to the early onset of warm weather. We completely sold out of mulch almost two weeks before the deadline. Donations were also up!
This was our most cost-effective sales drive of the last decade. Our total expenses were the lowest since 2007, as were our average expenses per bag delivered. As a result, the margin per bag paid into the Troop Treasury was the highest on record. We used a leaner mix of mostly donated trucks, trailers, and pickups this year, and mailing costs were minimized because of the high response rate to our hand-delivered flyers.
Some 29 hardworking Scouts and friends took part this year. Some two dozen parents also volunteered in the Mosby Woods lot, and on the road. We couldn’t have done it without our parent volunteers and their donated vehicles, gas, time, and efforts. The yard set up was efficient, and the food was excellent. There was a good mix of delivery vehicles with one large donated stake truck, one rented mini-flatbed, seven pick-ups, four trailers, and three cars or vans. The forklift was kept humming all day long, loading mulch and making numerous deliveries throughout the Mosby Woods neighborhood. Smooth operators all.
Congratulations, and thank you one and all.
Reminder tomorrow is the big day. Attached are a couple of photos of the mulch yard. We took delivery this morning of 80 pallets of mulch. We test delivered 5 pallets this afternoon and found they deliver great. Come join us at 7:00am to start the day off. We will provide food, drinks and general entertainment value.
Bring a friend, plan your exercise routine with us. Remember if you of you friends need service hours for school you can earn them by helping distribute mulch.
Dear Scouts and Scouters,
Troop 1113 needs pick-up trucks, trailers, and drivers to deliver mulch on Saturday, March 25th, starting at 7:00 AM the usual spot of Mosby Woods pool parking lot. If you have a pick-up truck or trailer and can drive for the Troop, please e-mail Dick Greene: email@example.com as soon as you know your availability.
If you don’t have a pick-up or trailer, the Troop also needs chase cars or minivans to ferry Scouts following the larger trucks. Driving a chase car involves nothing more than operating the vehicle. There is no need to lift or carry anything. If you can drive a chase car or van, please e-mail Dick Greene: firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you know of your availability.
Please mark your calendars now. This is the Troop’s only fund-raiser all year long. Please help us, and please let Mr. Greene know ASAP if you can donate your time or the use of your vehicle.
A big thank you to all the scouts and parents who contributed to the success of this year’s mulch flyer delivery effort.
After a bit of calculation we have the following wrap-up. Any comments or additions would be welcome.
On February 11, 2017 the Scouts and parents of Troop 1113 delivered 2693 advertising flyers to 20 neighborhoods to start the Mulch fundraiser for this year. The effort lasted from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
15 Scouts participated in the Troop 1113 effort, contributing approximately 60 person-hours. Some 9 parents participated, contributing approximately 39 person-hours, plus 9 vehicles and gas. The total personnel cost for the day comes to 99 person-hours. So it costs us about 2.2 minutes of volunteer time to get a flyer out. This is down from 2.7 minutes last year, itself a very good effort. In terms of delivery time per flyer, this is the most efficient operation we have run in the last eight years for which we have comparable records.
We have also mailed out 40 initial flyers . In a few weeks, we will do follow-up mailings to especially good customers who have not yet responded to our flyers.
After two weeks we have we have exceeded the five year average of bag sales and are fast approaching last year’s two-week total.
Troop Mandatory Event,
The date for delivering Mulch Flyers this year is Saturday February 11, 2017. mulch-2017-flyer
The Troop will need 8 – 10 cars and adult drivers on Saturday February 11th starting at 9:00 AM. We will leave from St. Leo’s parking lot to deliver Mulch Flyers to local neighborhoods. Drivers will be given maps of selected neighborhoods and about 150 flyers to deliver. The Scouts will provide the labor to deliver the Mulch Flyers to individual houses using the buddy system.
Please come in Class-A uniform for flyer delivery.
As usual, doughnuts, coffee, and hot chocolate will be made available.
With full participation we should be done by lunchtime. Mulch Flyer delivery is the first step in our Mulch delivery program. This is the Troop’s only fund raiser all year long. Please plan on participating. The flyer delivery activity is mandatory for all scouts.
