National Jamborees only occur every 4 years. For a youth – a Jamboree can be a once in a Scouting career opportunity. The next one will be in July 2017 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. 40,000 Scouts and Scouters in one place! (More detail about the Jamboree can be found at http://www.summitbsa.org/events/jamboree/overview/ .) Minimum age to attend is 12 years old. Registration is done on an individual basis by clicking on “register” at http://www.summitbsa.org/events/jamboree/overview/ . Once an individual registers they are put into a Troop that is formed just for the Jamboree. These Troops are formed by the local Council. (By the Way – registration is done on the National site but payment flows thru Council.)
Traditionally our Council (NCAC) has sent 12 Troops and 2 Venturing Crews to the Jamboree. 12 Troops at 36 boys per Troop = 432 youth slots. I understand from Council that many of these Troop slots are still open. (The Venturing Crew slots are full.) In past Jamborees, there has been a waiting list to go.
Council would like to start assigning boys to their Jamboree Troops in May/June 2016 so they are looking to fill the Troop slots soon. Encourage your boys to sign up for this opportunity.
For Order of the Arrow (OA) Members who are 16 to 21 years of age – the OA still has a few slots open in the Jamboree OA Service Corps.
For adults – there is still a need for adults to help staff the Jamboree. Adults between the ages of 18 and 25 pay a discounted fee. This includes program staff. Registration for staff is also thru the national site. I know of several Scouters from our District who will be on staff – including myself. Roy DeLauder will be in Transportation/Logistic support.
